ERA! ERA!

Yay! Someone has finally gotten off their ass and reintroduced the Equal Rights Amendment! Sen. Robert Menendez, D-N.J., and Rep. Carolyn Maloney, D-N.Y., are the amendment’s primary sponsors and will both get French-kissed if I ever meet them. Apparently, the recent decision by the supreme court that basically said “we could give a shit less if Wal-mart discriminates against female employees because there is no “significant proof” women are a group that is discriminated against and social scientist’s testimony doesn’t count, ha ha ha,” has spurred some people to action!

People who don’t believe that women, as an aggregate, are not discriminated against in the workplace are either ignoring the facts, asshats or stupid asshats. The Eagle Forum is full of all three types.

I dislike the Eagle Forum, intensely. They are a group of (mostly) white, middle/upper class women who have made patriarchal bargains (leaving the patriarchy unchallenged in exchange for advantages/power/privileges) and have done very well at it, plus any women they can convince it is their Christian duty to maintain traditional gender roles and prevent the freedom to choose abortion. The wealthier ones don’t want us silly feminists rocking their boat and disrupting their source of power/privilege … they want to remain in the happy cosseting of their patriarchal cocoon and the less-wealthy members are afraid Western civilization or Christianity will implode if women have jobs and can control their own reproduction.

The leader of Eagle Forum was Phyllis Schlafly, who began the group to fight the ERA. Yes, she wanted to make sure women were not given equal rights under the law. Why? Well her little cadre of anti-feminists warned Americans that the ERA would lead to, among other things,

  • Homosexual marriages
  • Women in combat
  • Taxpayer-funded abortions
  • Unisex bathrooms
  • Elimination of Social Security benefits for widows

Well, it looks like the homosexual marriage thing is going to become reality whether the ERA passes or not, so hardy-har-har Phyllis. Oh yeah, and a military advisory panel has recommended letting women participate in combat. No one really gives a shit about unisex bathrooms because women don’t feel empowered by urinals. Considering that only 14% of Americans want abortion to be always illegal (2/3 want it legal in some cases and 19% want it always legal) it looks like you are losing that war too. You should be comforted that your small vocal minority are doing their best to strip women of their rights, Phyllis. You might be able to impose your minority will on the majority! Finally, it looks like your team of far-right wankstains who have infiltrated the Republican party are trying to sabotage all social security, in theory to lower the deficit they created in the first place, so I flat out don’t believe you give a shit about widows and their benefits.

Y’all, if a miracle occurs and we actually pass the ERA I would be much less tempted to move to Denmark.

Now, go forth and promote the ERA!

    Hurrah for the ERA!

I work. I control my reproduction (currently have bun in the oven by choice and planning! although she *is* currently kicking my bladder rather persistently). I’m a Christian. I don’t feel that I’m offending anyone and if I am, they can suck it.

  4. Wondered why this reintroduction wasn’t done long before. This time it passes — or I’ll want to know the reason why. And ain’t no reason good enough.

In the 70′s I had a t-shirt with the ERA printed on the back. Wish I still had it. Wonder if the new wording is the same as the old?
