America the Moderate

Barack H. Obama was re-elected last night. Democrats retained the majority in Senate, and even added some seats. Republicans still hold the House, but it looks like they have probably lost some seats to Democratic challengers. In short, it was not a good night for the GOP.

Does this mean that there is now a liberal mandate in America, the likes of which has not existed since FDR? Hell, no.

The Democrats only won because of the far-right views of their opponents. They didn’t shift more moderate candidates, and even a few nutjobs like Steve King remained standing. Senate seats were unexpectedly gained because Teabagger Nimrods like Akin and Mourdock, who drove out their moderate predecessors in the primaries, opened their yaps about how women can’t get pregnant for a ‘legitimate’ rape and how if they did get pregnant then that was something “God intended”.  Americans, especially American women, are not amused with that shit. “Conservative” does not mean “Medieval”, regardless of the blather pouring forth from Faux News.

It wasn’t so much that America embraced progressive political policies, as it was they rejected extremist ideologues.

Although I am sure many in the GOP will see this and head sharply back toward the rational middle, where most democrats and Obama live even though they are mislabeled “liberals” all the damn time, there are some Republicans that are clinging like limits to the Koch-headed Teabagging hard right. They cannot see that Obama and the Democrats are happy as clams to keep the war machine oiled and the plutocratic corporation overlords appeased, and there is enough moneyed ass for everyone to kiss. Nope. They are having hissy fits.

Karl Rove, that despicable twatwaffle, went off the deep end on national television. Outspoken right wing idiots like Donald “We Shall Overcomb” Trump and Victoria Jackson blew their widdle gaskets on Twitter when Mittens lost. Other right wing outlets declared “war” against Obama’s supporters, demanded an impeachment, and called the President a new “Ceaser”.  Myth McConnell did what he does best — twist the truth, lie by omission, and try to make his ass look important – in one of the most ungracious and distorted speeches EVER:

“The American people did two things: They gave President Obama a second chance to fix the problems that even he admits he failed to solve during his first four years in office, and they preserved Republican control of the House of Representatives … The voters have not endorsed the failures or excesses of the president’s first term, they have simply given him more time to finish the job they asked him to do together with a Congress that restored balance to Washington after two years of one-party control. Now it’s time for the president to propose solutions that actually have a chance of passing the Republican-controlled House of Representatives and a closely divided Senate, step up to the plate on the challenges of the moment, and deliver in a way that he did not in his first four years in office. To the extent he wants to move to the political center, which is where the work gets done in a divided government, we’ll be there to meet him half way.”

Nary a word about your unbridled obstructionism and the fact your number one goal was to make Obama a one term President, even if it meant hurting the economy every way you knew how, eh?  Dude, you lost GOP seats in both houses of congress when the American people swept out the far-right candidates like they were dried mouse doots on the barn floor of politics and then then your fellow citizens re-elected Obama even with the Faux news lie-machine making up shit as it went along! Head toward the middle fast, you asshat!

Or don’t, because I would LOVE to see your butt tossed to the curb.

Upping the ante, a mega-mouthed mega-church pastor in Dallas wailed that the re-election of Obama would be “paving the way for the future reign of the Antichrist”. Other far right mouthpieces flat out called the Obamas tools of Satan and warned they were trying to force homosexuality on Americans. Sadly, he did not say Obama was trying to ram homosexuality down America’s throat, which would have given me a major giggle.

Although the political conservatives are very unhappy with the election results, the social conservatives (who are not every political conservative by any stretch of the imagination) are most bitter because they are clearly losing the culture war, since LGBTQ rights are obviously gaining ground and marijuana was declared legal in two states last night. Legalized marijuana in even a few states would be a big financial hit for Mexican drug cartels, so that is a big win/win good buddies!  In spite of these setbacks, social conservatives can be comforted by the fact that gay teens are still bullied to death.

As for myself, I am looking at a half full glass and I am going to take a moment to enjoy it.

Half full… half empty. I just know there’s room for a whole lot more in that glass!

There was much celebrating in my twitter feed last night as the LGBTQ, and to a lesser extent marijuana, decisions were announced. Most everyone I voted for yesterday was not elected, but I was quite relieved to hear that Mourdock will not be “representing” me in Congress. (I abuse the quotes because there’s no way in hell that anyone with his stated beliefs would work toward the kind of policies that are in my best interest or what I see as the greater good for this country and the world.)

I wasn’t even thinking about the cartel situation. My focus is on the fact that pot is safer than the medications I currently take for pain, with fewer side effects and not physically addictive. But yes, the situation on the Mexican border has become more dangerous in recent years, and cutting off the market for illegal marijuana can only be good long term. (Although the decisions were all in northern states– Washington, Montana, and Massachusetts. My guess would be that more of the pot coming into those areas is from Canada than Mexico.)

    Elizabeth Warren, 2020. :)

  4. I don’t know much about Elizabeth Warren but I’m going to research her because we need a 2 term woman to follow Obama and it doesn’t need to be Hilary Clinton even though I’ve liked her as secretary of state.

  5. Well, it only makes sense that the bigots and racists were going to double-down on their Armageddon rants. Let them continue to cry “the sky is falling, the sky is falling”.

One day people will realize the sky hasn’t fallen.

Many are already realizing it: the re-election of Obama (plus success of a number of initiaties such as pot, LGBT, etc.) shows this. The wingnut corner is shrivelling.

McCarthy’s commies under every bed eventually died its own death. This will too. I am not certain that this election will do it. You look at Fox and others and realized that there is ABSOLUTELY NO introspection. The “see, I told you Mitt couldn’t win” brigade is pulling their comments from the primary context (where they were back the Looney Toons like Bachmann, Gingrich, Perry & Co) to demonstrate that they ALWAYS KNEW. This is happening everywhere in the Wingnutsphere.

You can’t begin to make changes until you 1) accept that there is a probem and 2) understand what the problem is. The wingnuts still don’t believe there is a problem. So the GOP will either split into two factions (Wingnuts and Sane People) or wither, because it will not rejuvenate itself. Myth McConnell is a clear example of this…Limbooger and Palin too.

Which is fine for me: Hillary 2016 !!!!!!!!!!
