If you can’t beat ‘em, pretend to join ‘em

Have y’all noticed that there is a concentrated effort by the patriarchy (as represented by the far right) to brand feminists as man-hating bitches who eat sliced fetus on toast and worship vaginas? Me too!

There are two reasons they do this. 1) It makes women reluctant to call themselves feminist because no one wants to be “bad” and 2) it makes any woman who speaks up for herself and/or who points inequality a target to “accuse” of  being a feminist, and thus a “bad” woman. For example, if you you noticed that the “legacy of the Reagan era has been the devastation of economic and social programs benefiting women and children” and you think that sucks, no one is willing to talk about that when they can ask you about why you hate men/families/children/God/America!

However, this tactic is starting to fail the Far Right. Someone has leaked the information that “feminism” is no more and no less than the effort to establish political, economic, and social equality of the sexes. it turns out that people like that idea, so much so that 55 percent of women voters and 30 percent of men voters consider themselves feminists.

In response to the failure to make “feminism” synonymous with “she-devil”, the right wing has started to claim that THEY are feminists too!  They claim this whenever they trot out some puppet woman in politics who promises to uphold everything about the patriarchy and white male privilege in exchange for her personal slice of the patriarchal bargain pie. Hate to break it to you, but that ain’t any kind of feminism. It is what smart people call “bullshit”.

The right wing is gonna be real sad when people can see through the new bullshit in the same way they saw through the old bullshit.

  1. Rob says:

Fortunately, there is more to being a feminist than answering surveys. By their deeds shall you know them. But don’t disparage the fashion trend too much: the change we seek has to start somewhere.

  2. Love your brash style. It reminds me of the Rude Pundit. Conservatism will eventually go away like the confederacy almost has gone away. I suspect intelligent alien life will appreciate a liberal social democracy more so than a conservative fascist state. But, then again… who knows.

  3. It’s time for me to get out my old FEMINISM IS A LESBIAN PLOT T-shirt. A long-ago housemate made it for me. it’s very spiffy: black letters on lavender tie-dye.
